Landlords Struggle to Pay Their Debts

In the first 6 months of this year, latest figures show that almost 1,800 buy-to-let properties were reposessed, double the figure compared to the same 6 months of 2007.

The figures, from the Council of Mortgage Lenders, show 12,133 home loans (1.1%) are in arrears compared to just 5,837 (0.63%) in the same period of 2007.

The number of landlords failing to pay their mortgage for the last 3 months has also doubled. Many are struggling as mortgage rates rise, but rental rates are not increasing for them. But on a positive note for landlords, many are benefitting from the number of potential home buyers who cannot raise a mortgage and must instead rent. This means more people wishing to rent so less empty time for each property.
