Rampant Inflation Curbs Hopes of Rate Cut

An announcement by the British Retail Consortium that food prices jumped last month by 10% last month curbed hopes of an interest rate cut.

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee meets tomorrow (Thursday) and was already expected not to drop rates, but the announcement that shop prices overall increased by 3.8% last month, the fastest on record, put paid to most experts’ hopes.

This inflation is expected to continue through the Autumn, but it is hoped that the increase of cost prices should start to slow shortly. Overall, inflation is currently around the 4.4% mark, significantly above the 2% target set to the Bank of England.

Experts are still predicting a 0.25% cut at some point this year, almost probably in November, in time for some Christmas cheer.
