Virus Protection

If you are submitting personal and financial information over your computer on the internet, then security is no doubt on your mind.

Part of this is adequate virus protection. This should not only be an reputable piece of software, but this software should also be regularily updated. Ideally, updates should take place automatically.

But virus programs aren't the only level of security. Never open an attachment in an email unless you know the person sending the email and are expecting the email with an attachement. Emails with 'invoices' or 'personal pictures' attached are undoubtedly simple attempts at getting you to open an email with a virus program inserted. These usually appear to come from strangers, but viruses can also come from trusted friends.

Also, emails from your bank (or PayPal etc) requesting you to confirm your security details are also cheap attempts to access your bank. Just delete these emails and ignore them. If you are worried about their threats to close your account, type in the bank's URL, or search for it in a search engine, rather than clicking on the email link. If this doesn't help, give them a call or call into their branch.

Worried about becoming a victim of phishing? A decent spam filter should remove most phishing emails for you. Some software, such as Panda's internet security, also offer Phishing protection. Have a look now!
